Katie Poon

A Passing Cloud

In a story that moves from daily struggles in London to art theft and detective work, from the early Tang dynasty to the present day, Katie Poon weaves together many apparently unlikely strands to create an exciting and mysterious tale of research and redemption, and of the resolution of past crimes. The locations are all vividly described, from present-day London and its famous Chinese restaurants, the eastern coastal city of Qingdao and its remembered history of Japanese occupation, to the glorious Buddhist site of Mogao, near Dunhuang in China’s far west where the theft of an ancient manuscript is the starting point for an exciting and gripping investigation. The lives of her characters are determined by coincidence and by Buddhist karma in a clever interweaving of personal history, real characters and imagined villains. Where coincidence seems sometimes almost too unlikely, the slow process of karma and delayed punishment for past crimes overtakes the story and creates a redemptive conclusion.
